Tomorrow beginning at 10am the Como Community Center at 4660 Horne Street will host its Grand Opening, according to the CCC facebook page. This marks a new era for the neighborhood as the center will be home to a full gym, fitness facility, lounges/gaming areas, library, full-size teaching kitchen, and several other features that will be focused on the After School Program.
Hi all - a reader emailed me to see if we can help locate the owners for this lost dog picked up on Camp Bowie near the Starbucks. Dog has a collar but no chip, unfortunately. Email me ASAP if this is yours or if you have an info on the owner! email@example.com
Well...not exactly. A new place to chow down may be coming to our "northern gateway" but it won't be Edmonson's.
But it looks like someone has finally signed a lease on the property at 5701 Lovell Ave in Como and successfully received a permit from the City for "Occupancy Existing Ordinance" which correlates to a permission slip to occupy an existing property. This is great news for Como as it looks like we will be getting a brand new taqueria! I'm using context clues from their Facebook page as well as the City's Accela Citizen Access permitting site but it appears that they may have already had a soft opening of some sort on November 30, perhaps using a taco truck rather than the building itself. I was out of town and wouldn't have seen what was going on at that time but I drove by today and saw some contractors on site, so it looks like we're making progress. I'll be reaching out to the restaurateurs to see if we can nail down some more details in the meantime. In that event, I'll post updates in the "Local Businesses" section. With respect to the property itself, it has been in the current owner's hands since '08 so perhaps they have been sitting and waiting for their time to strike or waiting on someone who was willing to come to terms on a lease. The building is from 1967 and based on visual inspection, Edmonson's chicken was the last venture to occupy the property - possibly the only venture to occupy it. I haven't been around that long so anyone please feel free to chime in below, I'd love to hear some history on that joint.
Andrew lives on Kilpatrick Avenue in the center of Como and enjoys everything the neighborhood has to offer. You will often see him biking around the neighborhood - feel free to wave him down for a chat, he loves to meet new people!
